01What the flight simulator aptitude test is

A flight simulator aptitude test puts you at the controls of a simplified aircraft — flown on instruments — and asks you to do exactly what a real pilot does: fly assigned headings, altitudes and speeds to a series of waypoints. It is not a video game and it is not a full type-rated simulator. It is a controlled measurement of one thing: can you build an instrument scan and hold the aircraft on target?

02Why instrument flying is tested — even for beginners

Every professional pilot flies on instruments. The core skill is the instrument scan: continuously sweeping the panel, cross-checking the instruments against each other, and correcting small deviations before they grow. This is unnatural at first — your instinct is to fixate on one gauge — which is precisely why it is such a good predictor of trainability.

Airlines don't expect a cadet to already fly well. They want to see how quickly you adapt: whether you can take an ATC instruction, translate it into control inputs, and hold it smoothly. A candidate who has practised the scan arrives calm and controlled; one who hasn't spends the whole session chasing needles.

03What the simulator assessment scores

The simulator grade is a blend of several measurements taken continuously through each leg:

Track the assigned heading
How tightly you hold the cleared heading, and how quickly you roll onto it without overshooting.
ALTITUDE
Hold the assigned altitude
Root-mean-square deviation from the cleared altitude — small, controlled corrections beat big pitch chases.
SPEED
Maintain the assigned speed
How well you manage power to hold the cleared airspeed while everything else is changing.
WAYPOINT
Arrive overhead
How close you pass to each waypoint — flying the instruction accurately puts you right overhead by design.
CONTROL
Smoothness & excursions
Penalties for large pitch and bank excursions — the assessment rewards a stable, smooth aircraft over aggressive inputs.

04Why the scan is everything

The candidates who grade A all do the same thing: they run a rhythmic scan. Attitude indicator, then the instrument for the task at hand, back to attitude, on to the next — a repeating sweep that never parks on one gauge. When a deviation appears they catch it small and fix it with a gentle input, then return to the scan.

The candidates who grade D do the opposite: they fixate on the altimeter until the heading has wandered 20°, then fixate on heading until the altitude is 300 ft out. The aircraft is always chasing them. The difference between the two is not talent — it is practice, and it is exactly what this simulator lets you build.
